Set in the late 1960s, "Awakenings" chronicles the real-life events at a Bronx hospital where Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) is introduced to a group of catatonic patients.
These patients, who had been in this state for decades, are the survivors of a 1920s epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. Driven by curiosity and compassion, Dr. Sayer discovers the potential of the drug L-Dopa in reviving these patients.
Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), one of the patients, becomes the focal point of the story as he awakens from his decades-long slumber and tries to reclaim his life.
The film poignantly captures the joys, challenges, and heartbreaks of the patients' brief awakening and the emotional journey of the doctor who dared to challenge the status quo.
